In spite of a careful driving style and observing safety requirements every driver may cause a traffic accident which may result in damages to other vehicles and injuries to other people. Motor insurance indemnifies the damage incurred by the other party in order for it not to be borne by you. Motor insurance is therefore mandatory for all vehicles used in traffic and it is regulated by the Motor Insurance Act.
When buying motor insurance, it is possible to choose between two different types of contracts: an automatically renewable contract and a one-off contract.
You can check the validity of motor insurance here and the history of your damage here. In order to check whether a vehicle is covered by motor insurance, you should enter the registration plate of the vehicle or the number, date and coverage territory of the contract. As a response to your query, you will see information about the start date of validity of the last contract, the coverage territory of the contract and information about validity of the contract.
Motor insurance is valid:
There is no need to carry a motor insurance contract on paper with you while driving in Estonia, as the existence of insurance cover is verified electronically from the motor insurance register.
When driving in member states of the European Union, in Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Serbia, it is sufficient if you have a motor insurance policy with you. When driving in other green card countries, it is necessary to carry the green card with you.
When driving outside the European Economic Area, you should carry the green card with you to certify the validity of motor insurance abroad.
The green card, i.e. international motor insurance policy, is required in the following countries: Ukraine, Great Britain, Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Iran, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tunisia and Türkiye.
The green card is printed on white paper.
It comes as a complete surprise for many clients that after the sale of a vehicle it is no longer possible to terminate valid motor insurance. This arises from law – along with a change in the owner, all the rights and obligations, incl. motor insurance, transfer to the new owner.
Good to know:
If a vehicle has already been sold and, before that, the policy has not been discontinued, the money prepaid for the unused period will transfer to the new owner.
If the vehicle has a new owner according to the information of the register of the Road Administration, amendments to the motor insurance policy can only be made by the new owner.
If you send us an application for terminating a contract, the discontinuance may take several hours and, outside working time, even longer.
It is recommended that the insurance prepayment be regarded as part of the selling price.
