Estonians get their employers to pay for dental treatment

More and more Estonian companies have decided to provide health insurance for their employees to support their health and grant access to quick treatment if necessary. Seesam’s insurance statistics reveal that people primarily use this opportunity to cover dental care.

Every adult can use 40 euros of state dental care benefit each year, provided that the patient covers at least 50% of the invoice and keeping in mind that this benefit is only available at dentists who have an existing contract with the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. It is no secret that long overdue dentist appointments can prove to be much costlier.

“It is common to sign up for the maximum sum insured for dental care,” says Marit Raag, Health Insurance Product Manager at Seesam, “i.e. around 100-400 euros, depending on the indemnity. This covers appointment fees, dental treatment, examinations as well as dental hygienist services such as pearl cleaning.”

Seesam’s representative highlights that in addition to dental care, the motivation package is also actively used for rehabilitation and vaccination. According to the expert, they receive around 10 different claims every day.

“We are now actually seeing signs of stabilisation,” says Raag, adding that “Since access to medical services was restricted during the emergency situation, the number of claims for damages grew exponentially after the restrictions were lifted and the number of damage claims we received multiplied. At present, the largest indemnities are around €400.”

Seesam has yet to register any major operations, but in such cases, payments can be up to 4000 euros, including for hospitalisation, the cost of paid-for rooms, examinations and surgery as well as prescription medicinal products. A number of employers have also entered into an agreement to indemnify the cost of rehabilitation (physiotherapy, gymnastic therapy, massage therapy, etc.) prescribed to employees.

“We are delighted to see so many Estonian companies take an interest in the health of their employees,” says the expert on why so many companies have decided to provide health insurance. “This is important not only for the individual, but also for the ‘health’ of the entire company – healthy and happy people are better equipped to contribute to the company and do not have to take days off due to incapacity for work, and even if something serious should happen, health insurance helps employees return to work more quickly.”
