What to do if your pet falls ill or is involved in an accident

If you have noticed that your pet has a health problem or has been in an accident, stay calm and take the following steps:

  • Ensure the animal’s safety and well-being. Get your pet to a quiet, safe place and avoid any situations that could aggravate their injury.
  • Contact a vet. Call your usual clinic or the nearest emergency clinic. Describe the symptoms and ask whether you should come in for an immediate appointment.
  • Follow the vet’s instructions. If you have to give your pet any medicines, do so exactly as prescribed, and retain all prescriptions and treatment instructions – you will need them later on if you want to claim on your insurance.
  • Collect and keep all of the paperwork about your pet’s treatment, including invoices, receipts and treatment charts issued by the clinic. Ask the vet to note the treatment dates and medicines used.
  • Notify Seesam as soon as possible, but no later than 5 calendar days after learning about your pet’s illness or injury.
  • Monitor the animal’s condition following treatment: if it worsens, contact the vet again, retaining any documents related to additional costs you incur.

Documents required to claim compensation

If you are seeking compensation, you must submit an application and all of the necessary supporting documents to Seesam. The evidence which is normally required is set out below.

  • Copies of any prescriptions or an extract from your pet’s medical history showing what was prescribed and when.

If your pet dies:
